Fence Staining vs. Painting: Which Is Right for Your Lubbock Home?

May 2, 2026 · 6 min read · Lubbock, TX

Paint or stain? Both protect wood — but only one is right for a West Texas privacy fence. Here's how to choose, and why most Lubbock contractors won't paint a wood fence.

It's a common question: should I paint or stain my wood fence? In Lubbock specifically, the answer is almost always stain — and here's why.

The fundamental difference

Paint sits on top of the wood, forming a film. Stain penetrates into the wood, soaking into the grain. That single difference drives every other trade-off — how it looks, how it ages, how it fails, and how easy it is to maintain.

Why paint fails on Lubbock fences

  • Wood expands and contracts with Lubbock's huge temperature swings — paint can't flex with it, so it cracks and peels.
  • Moisture trapped behind the paint film causes rot from the inside out.
  • Once paint starts failing, it has to be scraped and primed before re-coating. That's expensive labor every 3–4 years.
  • Painted fences hide damage. You don't see the rot until you can poke a finger through the board.

Why stain works in West Texas

  • Penetrating stain moves with the wood — no peeling.
  • UV-resistant pigments in modern stain (premium commercial-grade stain, premium commercial-grade stain) hold color for 3–5 years in our climate.
  • When it's time to re-coat, you clean the fence and apply a fresh coat. No scraping, no priming.
  • You can see the wood's condition at a glance — easy to spot problems early.

When painting actually makes sense

Painting is the right answer in a few narrow cases: white picket fences where the homeowner wants that crisp painted look, fences attached to a painted house where matching is important, and previously-painted fences that you can't fully strip. Even then, expect to re-paint every 3–4 years and budget for it.

Our recommendation

For 95% of Lubbock fences — cedar, pine, privacy, or ranch rail — semi-transparent stain is the right move. It looks better, lasts longer, costs less to maintain, and lets you actually see your wood.
