The Best Time of Year to Stain a Fence in Lubbock

April 25, 2026 · 5 min read · Lubbock, TX

Lubbock's weather is unforgiving on wood — and on fresh stain. Here's exactly when to schedule a fence staining job in West Texas for the longest-lasting finish.

Timing matters more in Lubbock than almost anywhere else in Texas. We get high-elevation UV, sudden temperature swings, dust storms, and the occasional gully-washer — and stain has to cure under all of it. Here's when to schedule for the best long-term result.

The two ideal windows: spring and fall

Spring (mid-March through May) and fall (September through early November) are the prime seasons for fence staining in Lubbock. Daytime highs sit between 60°F and 85°F, overnight temps stay above 40°F, humidity is moderate, and rain is infrequent. Those conditions let stain absorb into the wood and cure properly — exactly what you need for a finish that holds up.

Summer: workable, but tricky

We stain through Lubbock summers, but it takes planning. We start at first light to beat the heat — once surface temperatures climb past 90°F, stain flashes off too fast and can leave lap marks. Late afternoon shade work is also an option. If a contractor offers to stain your fence in full sun at 2 PM in July, that's a red flag.

Winter: better than most people think

Lubbock winters are mild enough that we can stain on warm days through December and into February. The key requirements are temperatures above 50°F during application, 24 hours of dry weather before and after, and overnight lows that won't dip into freezing during the cure window. Winter scheduling is often faster — crews are less booked.

When NOT to stain

  • Within 24 hours of rain — wet wood won't absorb stain properly
  • On days where temps will swing more than 40°F (cure problems)
  • In high winds carrying dust — overspray and grit get embedded
  • On freshly pressure-treated wood that's still wet (wait 3–6 months)

Book early in the good seasons

Spring and fall fill up fast. Most quality Lubbock fence staining crews are booked 2–3 weeks out from late March through May and again from late September through October. If you're aiming for those windows, reach out early. Winter is usually our shortest lead time.
